In Detail

Clear Aligners

Invisalign is a whole new way to straighten your teeth invisibly by using a series of clear removable aligners to straighten your teeth without any metal wires or brackets. As you replace each aligner with the next in a series, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week - until they have straightened to the final position your orthodontist has prescribed.

Invisalign is for adults and because Invisalign is nearly invisible, you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. Invisalign retainers are removable so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment as well as being able to brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene. Invisalign is comfortable since it has no metal brackets or wires so you spend less time in the doctor's chair getting adjustments.

Rubber bands come in many different sizes and can be worn in many different ways. They are usually worn from the top teeth to the bottom teeth to help align the teeth so the bite is correct.

Holding Arches

A holding arch does exactly as the name implies - they hold your teeth in place. Holding arches are usually made by fitting braces on 6 year old molars. An impression is then taken to properly fit a wire around the back of your teeth. This attaches to the braces on your molars. This appliance is place in your mouth to act as the holding arch. On the lower holding arch, the wire fits very closely to the back of your teeth. On the upper holding arch, the wire fits next to the roof of your mouth. A small circular piece of plastic completes the upper holding arch. Holding arches are usually not visible to others.

C) When used alone or with a protraction facemask, the upper expander/bonded hyrax covers many of the back teeth.

Partial Braces

In early treatment braces are sometimes placed on the permanent six-year molars and the four front teeth. This can be done on the upper teeth, the lower teeth or both the upper and lower teeth. These appliances are used to align the teeth to their correct positions in the jaws. This allows the future eruption of the remaining permanent teeth to occur much better. These appliances are commonly called "two by fours."

Retainers

An appliance used at the end of Phase I, Phase II and comprehensive treatment. There are several different kinds of retainers that can be worn. Retainers worn after early treatment are different than those worn after full braces. Retainers may be removable or cemented to the inside of the front teeth.

Headgear

Such a device, worn for several hours a day, exerts a certain amount of pressure on the upper mouth, teeth and jaws. It is used to insure the proper eruption of upper teeth and to guide upper jaw growth.

Distal Jet

This appliance is used to widen the jaw by guiding natural jaw growth. This appliance uses the roof of your mouth as an anchor to move your molar teeth to their correct position, creating enough room that the crowded upper and lower teeth will fit together properly. Distal jets are cemented in place, usually for a three to six month period. Your teeth may experience sensitivity for three to four days and you may find swallowing and talking difficult for the first week, since extra saliva is common. You may need to use over the counter medications if discomfort is present.
